With Walkers and Tropicana under Ellington’s leadership, the UK general manager has faced a potentially damaging backlash from a health lobby intent on vilifying both salt and sugar. And with sales of both classics taking a hit, Ellington responded with innovation to provide health-conscious consumers with what they wanted.
Sales picked up accordingly with the new wholegrain Walkers Sunbites in double-digit growth and Walkers Pops amassing £18m in sales. And a multimillion pound above the line marketing campaign for Pepsi Max paid off too with the sugar-free option leaping ahead of the original in 2015.
