The first fishery in Africa has applied for full assessment to the Marine Stewardship Council standard.
The South African Hake Trawl Fishery will be evaluated for compliance by UK certification body Moody Marine.
The fishery targets the deep water Cape hake and the shallow water Cape hake within the South African exclusive economic zone and is the most valuable fish resource in South Africa.
Recent harvests have been the best in more than 25 years.
The provisional assessment schedule is expected to last for 16 months, and was due to begin this month.
