Giamellaro brings latin passion to UK Italian food firm

The charismatic Mauricio Giamellaro has been ringing the changes ever since becoming MD of the traditional Italian food producer and distributor, Galbani UK, in January.

The 33-year-old Brazilian was headhunted from PepsiCo Brazil by the company’s worldwide chairman, Maurizio Manca, to bring its UK operation up to date.

Giamellaro only had three months to learn English before moving to Britain with his wife and two children, but he says: “You don’t have to know the right English to lead a company. All you need is the right attitude.

“One thing I bring from the Latin America is the passion. My commercial team at Galbani UK is brilliant; they have the knowledge about cheese and customers, but one thing was missing – a big heart. If I can add that, nothing can stop us.”

Giamellaro was brought up in a poor family and has relied on a “can-do” attitude to rise through the ranks of PepsiCo and Unilever Brazil, becoming commercial manager of Wall’s Ice Cream by 30.

And he plans to instil his ‘anything is possible’ belief into the minds of his UK staff to help achieve his first aim of making Galbani a dynamic company capable of delivering speedy solutions to the multiples and wholesalers.

“I tell everyone that if you think anything is impossible, please, please don’t tell me, because then I might change my mind,” says Giamellaro.

“Over the past six years, Galbani UK launched one product per year but this year, since January, we have launched 14 products. Everyone now knows they can work at my speed.

“Simple strategies are the best. We’ve doubled profits and delivered 15% turnover growth this year by doing the basics, even through restructure.

“I am very proud of our achievements and so is the whole team. We have the right products, the right skills and with the right spirit we can fly.”
