Retail crime cost shopkeepers more than £2bn last year, figures from the British Retail Consortium have revealed.
The BRC found that goods stolen by shop workers increased by 77% last year to £498m, while goods stolen by customers cost shops £589m - an increase of 44%.
The retail sector also spent £710m on anti-shoplifting initiatives in 2004.
