Artificial food colours are set to be removed from hundreds of products after researchers at Southampton University carried out an official study into seven additives for the FSA and found E-numbers were doing as much damage to children's brains as lead in petrol, The Independent has reported. Officials have advised their directors to call for the industry to remove six of the additives by the end of next year.

Cobra is launching a £14m ad campaign aimed at turning the curry house brew into one of Britain's top 10 lagers. The TV and print campaign, which will start in the summer, would put Cobra in the same marketing spending bracket as the country's leading brewers, according to chief executive Adrian McKeon.

Melton Mowbray pork pie has joined the ranks of Champagne, Parma ham and Whitstable oysters after gaining Protected Geographical status. The Daily Telegraph said the status had been granted after a 10-year battle. Only producers using a traditional recipe and in the vicinity of Melton Mowbray would have the right to use the title, it added.

Sales of alcohol-free beer have broken through the £10m-a-year barrier, the Daily Mirror has reported. It said sales of alcohol-free beer had shot up 17.6% at Tesco in the past year due to improvements in taste. Tesco doubled its range to nine alcohol-free beers to meet demand, it said. Sales of traditional lager fell 4.5% last year to £2.3bn.

Tesco has begun legal proceedings against the Guardian for libel and malicious falsehood over allegations made by the Guardian concerning its tax affairs. Tesco said the paper had knowingly misled its readers in a series of articles and a podcast alleging it had contrived a tax avoidance structure involving joint ventures held offshore to avoid paying up to £1bn of tax on sales of its UK properties.
