AG Barr, maker of Irn-Bru, Tizer and Orangina brands, has recruited Roger White as managing director.
White, who takes up his post on September 30, will be groomed as chief executive, ready for the time when chairman Robin Barr takes on a part-time role.
Barr, 64, said: "The idea is that I would take on a part-time chairman's role. When Roger will take over fully as chief executive depends on how long it takes him to settle in. I would foresee the handover taking place by the end of next year. Roger has an intimate knowledge of the top and bottom end of grocery retailing."
White has worked for Ranks Hovis McDougall for 15 years where he is commercial director of RHM subsidiary British Bakeries.
Before that he was md of Le Pain Croustilliant (sp??).
