super broccoli

Introducing enriched broccoli variety Beneforté into a balanced diet could significantly reduce heart disease-causing LDL-cholesterol levels, a scientific study has suggested.

In trials by the Institute of Food Research (IFR) and University of Reading, 130 volunteers ingested 400g of the broccoli per week over 12 weeks. Study results, published in the journal Molecular Nutrition and Food Research, showed a drop of LDL-cholesterol levels by an average of 6%. Developed by the IFR and seed developer Seminis, Beneforté contains high levels of glucoraphanin, thought to help the body rebalance its metabolism away from production of LDL-cholesterol.
