BAT is to launch its Vype e-cigarettes

British American Tobacco has become the first major tobacco manufacturer to launch an electronic cigarette in the UK.

Launched this week, Vype is currently only available online but will be offered to mainstream retailers from September.

The Vype e-cigarette is priced £6.99 online and delivers approximately 130 puffs, according to BAT’s laboratory testing.

The launch follows BAT’s acquisition of UK technology business CN Creative in December. Vype uses a nicotine e-liquid that is made in the UK to current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) standards and contains only pharmaceutical grade nicotine.

It is currently made as a disposable product, although a rechargeable version is in development. As a tobacco company, BAT said it understands what smokers really want from the experience of an e-cigarette.

BAT also said the development of inhaled tobacco products, which includes e-cigarettes, is a natural extension of its approach to tobacco harm reduction, which has been evolving over a number of years.

Any products BAT sold had “to meet very strict criteria that also apply to all its supply chain partners”, said the company’s director for next-generation products Des Naughton. He added that it would not be using its tobacco sales network to distribute Vype, because it preferred to keep its tobacco and smoking alternative businesses separate.

Last month the UK government announced it was planning to regulate e-cigarettes as medicines by 2016. The EU is also currently pushing through legislation that would see the category regulated in this way.

  • This is a smart looking product. Let's just hope that this isn't the only product available when/if the new regulations come in in 2016 and the competition is therefore wiped out.
On the whole, we welcome as many new products to the market as possible, as long as the playing field remains level.

  • If this was the only electronic cigarette available, there would be 1.3 million more smokers in the UK. Tasteless, useless battery life and horrendously expensive product, which is just what we expect from the tobacco industry. It's a shame they don't understand vapers as much as they seem to believe they do.

  • The product just doesn't deliver! The battery life is appalling, making it a very expensive product. It is actually much cheaper to smoke, (less healthy I know). Surely if they want to promote smoking harm reduction (as they claim), then they need to consider the price of their new vapour products and make them less expensive, encouraging people to quit tobacco smoking and switch to the healthier alternatives. Again it looks like the tobacco industry is just out to make a massive profit without any regard for the customer.

  • Basically, the contents of electronic cigarettes and traditional cigarettes are different. There are great diversities of parts and contents, such as the use of tobacco. Electronic cigarettes do not require tobacco. Deb -

  • Very good product, I was very impressed with the weight and feel of the product having previously tried e-lights which were like holding and smoking a steel bar.

Unfortunately and as previously stated it is cheaper to by the real thing so provides no real incentive to switch.

No doubt the high cost is due to research and design etc but I also suspect the greedy tobacco firms are just trying to cash in on a very lucrative market.
