Giraffe cafés: shorter menu for ‘casual experience’

Tesco is to launch new café-style instore versions of its Giraffe restaurant chain.

Six Giraffe cafés will open this summer at Tesco Extra stores in Cheam, Cirencester, Newcastle upon Tyne, Poole, West Durrington and Glasgow, all stores with a high proportion of daytime customers.

“We have listened to our customers and agreed on an all-day café model best suited for smaller locations,” said Giraffe co-founder Russel Joffe. “We’ve created a shorter menu to showcase the more popular dishes and made breakfast available throughout the day.”

It is estimated the rollout will create 200 jobs.

Tesco has also partnered with a third gym chain as continues to re-invent its hypermarkets. The Tesco Extra in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, which opened in February, is to have a gym run by 24/7 Fitness.

It will be the fourth gym based in a Tesco, following previous tie-ups with Xercise4less in Stockton and Pure Gym in Sunderland and Sheffield, all targeting gym goers on a budget. With five clubs nationwide, 24/7 Fitness is promising membership fees from £17.95 a month.
