Not to be outdone by Sainsbury's which launched Purple Majesty spuds from Albert Bartlett last week Tesco is introducing a purple potato of its own.

Purple Mountain, which is being sold in Tesco's Finest range, is a sweet potato with a grey skin and intensely purple flesh. Grown in China and the US, it was the first purple sweet potato to go on sale in a UK supermarket, said the retailer. "We want to make Tesco the destination shop for exotic sweet potatoes," said Tim Pratt, technical manager for potatoes. "We already stock the white and orange sweet flesh potatoes, and hope our latest addition will add more excitement to the category."

Customers recognised the added health benefits of purple vegetables, which were naturally higher in free radical-fighting antioxidants, he added.

Purple Mountain starting rolling into Tesco last week (rsp: £1.99 for 500g).
