Majestic Wine has become the first national alcohol retailer to become an accredited employer of the Living Wage.

All 1,200 staff at the wine specialist will now be paid a minimum of £8.25 per hour, or £9.40 in London - at least 15% more than the chancellor’s mandatory national living wage of £7.20 per hour for all staff 25 and over.

The retailer has also received accreditation from the Living Wage Foundation for its commitment, the first national wine and alcohol retailer to do so.

People director at Majestic Louise Ellis said: “At Majestic we value our fantastic employees who inspire and delight our customers every day with a great range of wines and services.

“I’m very proud that Majestic is now an accredited employer of the Living Wage Foundation and I hope other retailers follow.”

Director of the Living Wage Foundation Katherine Chapman added: “It’s really exciting to have Majestic joining the growing list of accredited Living Wage retailers. Like Majestic, many employers want to go above and beyond the statutory minimums on pay, including the ‘national living wage’ for over 25s, because they recognise that people are the lifeblood of their business.”
