Morrisons has won the race to get the first British strawberries into stores.

British strawberries went into 25 Morrisons stores across southern England yesterday, the Daily Mail reports. The will go into 15 Tesco stores in Kent today, with Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Asda set to follow suit in the next few days.

“The first British strawberry signifies the end of winter and heralds the arrival of spring,” said Waitrose soft fruit buyer Nicki Baggott.

“This explains why it’s the ultimate feel-good fruit – and one which retailers are clamouring to get on shelves as early as they can.” she added.

The crop comes despite Britain suffering one of its coldest winters on record.
