Midlands Co-operative Society has named Tony Carroll as its deputy chief executive.

Carroll has worked at the UK’s second biggest co-op since 1987 and is currently general manager for food and non-food retail.

He will continue to have responsibility for the retail business but will now take on a wider range of duties.

“My focus on building the success of our retail division over recent years will continue but, in addition, I am looking forward to taking a more active role in planning the wider strategic direction of our society and the co-operative movement in general, which is currently experiencing a renaissance in the minds of many consumers,” he said.

“I am looking forward to what I’m sure will be a new challenge and some exciting times ahead.”

This week Midlands Co-op reported record full-year results.

Trading profits rose 16% to £18.9m in the year to 23 January, on sales up 8% to £918m. Like-for-like food sales rose 3.4%.
