Makro is hoping to increase customer loyalty by launching a Spend and Save card.

As part of the incentive, which runs until 4 December, every time a customer spends £20 in a Makro depot, they will receive a stamp in their card. Once they have enough stamps they will be able to buy a cookware set for an 80% discount or a knife set for a 90% discount.

The scheme was unique because it was a consumer-style promotion in a business-to-business environment, said David Ringer, general manager for UK & Ireland at TCC, which organised the scheme.

"Sales promotions have long been a staple of effective consumer marketing. However, the crossover to the B2B environment has not been widely adopted in the UK. Makro is the first to actively use sales-promotion based marketing," he said.

Makro customer management director Mark Copeland added: "The launch underlines our commitment to giving customers the very best choice, superb-quality products and unbeatable discounts. Our professional cookware and knife range is among the best."
