Marks & Spencer has announced plans for what it called its “most sustainable UK store” in Sheffield.

The new site marks the first “sustainable learning stores” the retailer will use to develop its expertise in sustainable techniques as part of its ‘Plan A’ commitments.

The 12,400 sq ft Simply Food store, which opens in April, will be heated by expended energy from its refrigeration units and harvest rainwater to cut its water usage by 40% over a conventional store of equivalent size.

“This store represents a big milestone in our sustainable construction programme,” said M&S property director Clem Constantine.

“The learning we have taken from building the store, coupled with those we will make over its lifetime, will help us achieve our goal of becoming the world’s most sustainable major retailer by 2015.”
