The sell: The Brazilian tipple – a citrus-flavoured cachaça – aims to extend the appeal of cachaça drinks outside its caipirinha cocktail heartland. 


The consumer
Salto is a drink that would work well in a cocktail. Taken neat, it was overpowering, with a strong citrus taste. However it was really refreshing when mixed with orange juice and ginger beer. It is crisp and clean with a tangy aroma. Salto is enjoyable but lacking in any distinct character. I felt that it needed a little something extra to distinguish itself from the other spirits on the market. Three stars (out of five)

The expert
The spirit market always needs new products and innovation so it is good to see a new entrant. Salto's taste profile is predominantly slightly bitter with strong citrus cues so it will not be to everyone's taste probably best for the 25+ experimental drinker. It certainly needs ice and would go best with fruit juice. However, the rather staid packaging gives no serving prompts, which is unlikely to create impulse buying in the off-trade. Two stars

The Grocer
Not being familiar with cachaça before trying Salto, I was rather confused by it. Do I drink it neat, do I mix it, and with what? I'm all for not cluttering up packaging with too much information, but on this occasion, a bit of info would have been helpful, especially as the Salto website isn't easy to navigate. In the end, I wasn't too keen on the taste neat or mixed. The citrus was too sweet for my liking, and there was an abrasive aftertaste. Two stars
