Unilever Bestfoods has hoisted the for sale sign over British stalwart Ambrosia as part of its strategy to focus on core brands.

The move follows an extensive business review at the Devon-based custards and rice pudding business, which employs 200 staff, said UK sales director Tony Smith.

However, the sale should not be seen as an indication other key UK brands such as Pot Noodle or Marmite were also heading for sale, he emphasised.

“We still want to hold on to powerful local brands,” he said, adding retail sales of Ambrosia topped £63m this year.
