Asda has rolled out its loyalty programme Asda Rewards nationwide, with availability at 633 stores.

The app-based loyalty programme – the supermarket’s first – was initially launched in October last year at 16 stores across West Yorkshire and the West Midlands. Last month, the programme was extended to a further 300 stores.

More than a million customers have signed up to the scheme, Asda said, building up a total of more than £4m in their ‘Cashpots’.

Customers using Asda Rewards “earn pounds, not points” building up a Cashpot to spend in Asda stores or online, by doing their usual grocery shop and scanning their app when they check out.

Shoppers can also complete ‘in-store missions’ to top up their pots such as the ’Fruit and Veg Bonus – Buy any 10 fruit and veg and get £1.50’. Another mission is the ‘Back to School’ mission, where customers receive £5 into their Cashpots when they spend £25 on George school uniform.

Some 400 products have also been designated ‘Star Products’, and customers receive 10% back into their Cashpot when they add any to their basket.

“We know that times are tough for families right now, so it’s great to be able to reward them for simply shopping with us,” said Mark Baxter, senior director for loyalty at Asda.

Shoppers can redeem the amount in their Cashpots whenever they choose by creating a voucher in the app. The rewards programme also covers online delivery and click & collect – via a link between the app and a user’s online asda.com account.

In July, Asda launched a credit card exclusive to members of Asda Rewards.

Shoppers using the new credit card will earn 1% for every £1 spent on groceries, fuel and other Asda services, with an additional 0.3% cashback on all other purchases outside of Asda.

Asda had for some time been the only one of the big four supermarkets without a loyalty rewards scheme, having until now focused on EDLP.
