Asda Havant, Hampshire

0 The shelves were being restocked when our shopper visited this Supercentre. But that didn't stop staff offering to help our shopper locate the Sacla' pesto and Parma ham - although the required sizes were not stocked. Despite the store's large size, it was spacious and logically laid out. All 32 checkouts were operating and queues were being processed at an impressive speed. Bags for Life were readily available.

0 Our Liverpudlian shopper was impressed by the attentive customer service - especially at the checkout where the operator checked the eggs were unbroken as she scanned them. The store was clean and tidy throughout, but the promotion bins looked unsightly in the centre of the aisles. The required pack size of Parma ham was not stocked but alternatives were available. Staff were efficient but our shopper was overcharged for the Kleenex and eggs on the receipt.

1 Although the fruit and vegetables looked to be of decent quality at this Sainsbury's, the fresh produce section was not logically laid out and the pineapples and avocados were not where our shopper expected. The large-sized free-range eggs were not stocked and the four-pack of Stella Artois was sold out, but no other gaps were noticed on the shelves. Staff were polite and the checkout operator was cheerful - though not enough tills were open.

We visited on 20 June at 1.35pm. Our shop lasted 49 minutes. Time spent at the checkout was six minutes.

0 Though all 33 products were available at this Tesco Extra, the shopping environment left a lot to be desired. The aisles were clean but congested because several large packing trolleys lay abandoned by shelf stackers. The checkout assistant was quite sullen and our shopper found the lack of parent and child parking a problem. On the positive side, there was a wide variety of special offers, availability was strong and 32 of the 39 tills were open.

0 This pristine store was decked with huge promotional boards advertising special offers, and also lots of shelf-edge tickets stating price comparisons with Sainsbury's. The staff were professional and courteous and the store was easy to navigate. Four items were not stocked in the required sizes but alternatives were available and the shelves were mostly free of gaps. There were no queues at the checkouts, and 10 of the 12 tills were open.
