It’s been a rough week for our sweet-toothed friends across the Atlantic, where dessert theft has seen a serious spike.
In Canada, thieves have made off with £15,000 worth of maple syrup from a depot in Montreal. That’s about 20,000 litres. And maple heists have hit before; perhaps not surprising when you consider a barrel is worth 13 times more than the equivalent amount of crude oil.
South of the border, New York City billionaire John Catsimatidis is offering a $5,000 reward for information about a spate of ice cream thefts. Knickerbocker nickers are targeting supermarkets and his Gristedes c-stores, then selling their bounty on to smaller ‘bodegas’. And the crimewave is being boosted by a heatwave in the city.
