Unilever UK Foods has taken the beef out of its Bovril hot food drink and replaced it with a vegetarian-friendly yeast mix.
The £9.3m brand has seen volume sales in the UK slump by between 1-2% annually over the past four years. Export markets have also taken a hit due in part due to the BSE-crisis and restrictions in some Muslim markets, notably Malaysia, on selling non-halal meat.
A spokesman for Bovril said: “Many people haven’t been buying the product because they are concerned about eating beef extract. A cup of Bovril will still have its characteristic warm and savoury taste, but can be drunk by vegetarians as well.”
