Eric Cantona has pledged to swim the English Channel… if 10,000 Brits are willing to agree that Kronenbourg 1664 is the world’s best-tasting beer.

The Gallic goalscorer, who has fronted campaigns for the beer since 2013, made the pledge in the first of four videos for digital campaign #LeBigSwim, which went live today (2 July).

In the video, Cantona sits behind a table in a rustic courtyard setting with four news mics and a pint of Kronenbourg in front of him. The former Man Utd striker declares: “I have an announcement to make. I, Cantona, will swim the English channel to Britain – if you agree that Kronenbourg is the supreme tasting beer in the world.”

Fans are invited to signal their agreement with Cantona by visiting the Kronenbourg Twitter, Facebook and Youtube pages.

“We have been delighted with the brand momentum generated by A Taste Suprême and our association with Eric,” said Heineken beer brand director Ifeoma Dozie. “It resonates with consumers and we are taking it to the next level with rich, digital content, supported through PR and VOD, that will reach consumers at the right time for them.”

Kronenbourg is also rolling out limited-edition packing across its 440ml cans, 275ml bottles, and all multipacks highlighting the lager’s use of Strisselpalt hops from Alsace with the tagline ‘Vive les hops d’Alsace’.

Last February, the ASA banned an advert featuring Cantona for suggesting the Kronenbourg sold in the UK was sourced and brewed in France with the statement. Four months later, it overturned the decision, saying it was satisfied the ad did not imply all of the hops used in the beer were from Alsace, or that the beer was brewed in France.
