Asda has appointed Andy Bond as new chief operating officer as part of a major senior management team restructure.

Bond has been with Asda for 10 years and is taking the post that was vacated when Richard Baker left to become chief executive officer with Boots. Bond will be responsible for retail and logistics, and continues his work with Global George and his chairmanship of Gazeley.

President Tony De Nunzio says: "Andy has shown tremendous leadership, strategic insight and delivery during his Asda career. He has been a major architect of our success in the George business over the last few years taking the brand to nearly number one volume in the UK and expanding globally. He has also been more recently a driver of strong GM performance".

David Downie is taking over as director of logistics from David Cheesewright, who is moving to Wal-Mart Canada as chief operating officer.

Downie is presently a retail director, but started out with Asda as a store manager and then became regional managing director for Scotland and North divisions

The current RMD for the North division, Tony Page, will join the executive board as non-food director, reporting to De Nunzio. He will lead the George UK, GM, speciality and new business areas.

Asda also announced the appointed of its first female RMD. Sally Hopson will take up the position of RMD for the North, following success driving people policies over the last two years.

Commercial Finance Director Steve Makin is promoted to the Operating Board.
