Asda has revealed plans to become the largest retailer of official Walt Disney merchandise in the UK, ahead of arch-rival Tesco and the official Disney stores.

Asda already stocks a variety of Disney merchandise, including a range of officially licensed clothing produced by George. It has a dedicated Disney Shop on its Asda Direct website.

Its most popular Disney lines are its dress-up ranges of character clothing, which were recently flagged up on website mumsnet.com after Asda offered a 2-for-£20 offer on princess dresses, which retail for about £25 each in offical Disney stores.

"We are planning on making Asda the UK's biggest Disney store by boosting our character merchandising," confirmed Asda CEO Andy Clarke.

Last year, Asda launched a number of successful tie-ins with Disney, including an Alice in Wonderland promotion. It also launched a clothing line for Hannah Montana, sponsored the show on the Disney Channel and offered the chance to voice a Pea-in-a-Pod character on the Blu-ray and DVD UK release of Toy Story 3.

Tesco has a range of Disney clothing, as well as a Disney-themed kids food range, which includes a Mickey Mouse-shaped cheese and tomato pizza.
