Asda has yet again driven The Grocer 33 shopping basket to an all-time low, with its Harpurhey store north of Manchester charging £36.43 for our full list. The store is located in a low income area with Kwik Save next door. There were plenty of Rollback deals and Walkers crisps were cheaper than on our shopper's last visit to Asda.

North of the border, Sainsbury's in Drumchapel was "very tidy" with "excellent" staff. Mature cheddar had been reduced by £2/kg to bring in the next cheapest full basket.

The Co-op in Hove checked in the other full list and was very busy with mature shoppers, many of whom were taking advantage of the Home2U delivery service.

Hardys wine was out of stock in half of our regions and cost Safeway in Plymstock the chain's lowest-ever priced basket, where coffee, cereal, eggs and bacon were all noticeably cheaper than usual.

Morrisons in Bulwell was packed and difficult to get round with staff stacking shelves, but they were very happy to offer assistance.

A change in layout at Waitrose in Norwich has improved an already well-merchandised store. It missed out on a full The Grocer 33 list but came up with this week's cheapest category shop basket (see facing page).

Somerfield's small store in Talbot Green carried a "great range" despite a "heaving" Tesco across the road.
