Asda Sheffield, South Yorkshire

2 This Asda was coping admirably with the Friday afternoon rush when our shopper visited and although there were numerous shelf stackers on duty, there was ample room to navigate the aisles. Staff were friendly and offered to look into the availability of items not on display. X-for-y promotions were visible throughout the store and more than a third of the items were on special offer. Both the Hovis bread and loose potatoes, however, were out of stock.

morrisons Reigate, Surrey

1 Our shopper noted a great atmosphere in store with lots of energetic staff looking busy and attentive. The store was immaculate and easy to navigate but the experience was tarnished by a loud exchange - including swearing - between two shelf stackers. The store provided everything on the list save for the Birds Eye Simply Cod in Batter, while the fresh produce section was well merchandised with lots of attractive promotions.

sainsbury's Drumchapel, Glasgow

1 Enthusiastic staff were prepared to go out of their way to help our shopper at this busy Glasgow store. The shelves were attractively presented and well merchandised, while the store itself was clean and tidy. Our shopping list highlighted numerous special offers with 2 for £3 on Nestlé Shreddies and Danone Bio Activia and reductions on new potatoes and Old El Paso fajita Dinner Kits. Birds Eye Simply Cod in Batter, however, was out of stock awaiting delivery.

tesco Chelmsford, Essex

0 This Tesco provided the week's only full shop but uninspiring customer service and a mistake on the till receipt cost it the top store award. A host of special offers at the store's entrance caught our shopper's eye as did a huge choice in fresh produce. There were notable promotions on Kronenbourg 1664 beer, Huggies Wipes and Herbal Essences shampoos but help with packing was not forthcoming and spring onions were omitted from the till receipt.

We visited on 27 June at 3.10pm. Our shop lasted 42 minutes. Time spent at the checkout was six minutes.

waitrose Sudbury, Suffolk

1 Despite a floor space of just 32,000 sq ft, this store was spacious and uncluttered and a pleasure to shop in, according to our shopper. Staff were extremely knowledgeable and eager to help, while the checkout assistant was chatty and efficient. Although the Saxo Table Salt was out of stock, numerous alternatives were available and there were eyecatching promotions on Diet Coke and Bertolli pasta sauce. The only criticism was a shortage of salad products on display.
