The Co-operative Group is on the hunt for a new marketing boss after director of marketing Patrick Allen revealed he was leaving the society.

Allen has worked in the Co-operative movement since 2004 and was leaving to "seek opportunities to develop his career in a senior commercial role elsewhere", the society said.

He joined United Co-operatives in May 2004 after running a consultancy. In 2007 when United Co-op merged with The Co-op Group, he was named director of marketing for the enlarged business.

"I've had a fantastic six years with the Co-op, during one of the most exciting periods in its history," Allen said. "I'm now looking to use the experience I've gained over that time, and before joining the group, in a senior commercial management role."

Allen was behind the Co-op's epic Blowin' In the Wind ad, launched last year to highlight the society's portfolio of businesses and its ethical credentials. Although critics questioned the timing of the ad during a recession, it was well received by shoppers and was credited with creating a renaissance for the co-op movement.

"I would like to thank Patrick for the contribution he has made to the group over the past few years and wish him well as he now looks to develop his career further," said CEO Peter Marks. "Our brand has never been stronger or more relevant to our customers, members and the communities in which we operate. I shall, therefore, be considering the best way in which this marketing momentum can be maintained."

Allen is the second high-profile marketer to leave the society within the past few months. In January, Debbie Robinson, the society's director of food retail marketing, left following a restructure after 23 years at the society.

Allen's departure also means two of the big five are looking for a new marketing director. Sainsbury's is currently recruiting for the position following a management reshuffle last month that saw Gwyn Burr relinquish responsibility for marketing while taking on responsbility for HR.
