The Co-operative Group is building a new 320,000sq ft regional distribution centre in West Thurrock and extending its Fareham depot in a bid to improve its service to stores.
The society, which is also opening a new national distribution centre in Coventry this year, recently admitted that supply chain problems had dented first-half profits and hit availability in stores.
A surge of acquisitions in recent years had put a major strain on the distribution network, said a spokesman, and it was being re-engineered. “There will be further changes to the network in due course - this is part of an ongoing review.”
