Appleby Westward Group is to open the first Eurospar stores in southern England after securing three Somerfield stores from The Co-operative Group.

The Spar wholesaler will reopen the stores in Keynsham, Liskeard and Minehead by Christmas as Eurospars Spar's larger store format.

"This secures significant volumes for our distribution centres and takes us forward into a new era of operating stores," said MD John Pattison, who ran the three stores when he was Somerfield's retail MD for the west. "It represents a big culture change for us and will add significant strength to the business."

The stores in Liskeard and Minehead will continue to offer home delivery.

AWG is now looking at a greenfield site for a fourth Eurospar and plans to open 17 more stores in the next 10 years. This year the first Eurospars on the British mainland opened, in Wales, Sheffield and Nottingham.
