Lidl has opened its most northerly UK store following a lengthy planning process.
The 13,756 sq ft store in Orkney, Scotland opened its doors on Thursday (22 June). It will stock 1,000 lines and feature Lidl's signature twice-weekly promotional offers.
A spokesman for Lidl Scotland emphasised that prices in the Orkney store would be exactly the same as its other 75 Scottish stores, in keeping with its 'One Nation, One Price' policy. "Lidl offers the exact same prices in Kirkwall as we do in Glasgow or any other Scottish store, even though a delivery to Orkney costs us twice as much as a delivery to Edinburgh. Generally, products delivered to the Islands are more expensive," he said.
Lidl had planned to open the store in February, but it took longer than expected as it faced local opposition.
The exterior of the Kirkwall store follows a new design format which Lidl has developed for stores in extremely cold locations.
