As its fight against the pasty tax rages on, Greggs is ramping up the number of frozen savouries it sells through Iceland.

Following the success of its sausage rolls in the frozen discounter, Iceland is taking on eight new lines and increasing the Greggs branding in its stores.

The new savouries include twin-packs of sausage and bean melts, chicken bakes, cheese and onion pasties, chilli steak lattices and Cornish pasties. It is also taking on a Greggs dessert line with triple-packs of toffee apple lattice.

The entire range retails for £1.50 apart from the Cornish pasties which are priced at £1.75. Promotional posters have also been added above freezers in stores.

A member of staff in one of the trial Iceland stores confirmed the range was proving “extremely popular”.

Greggs was unavailable for comment as it was busy marching on Downing Street to deliver a 500,000-signature petition demanding that the infamous pasty tax - which will slap a VAT hike of 20% on Greggs savouries - is dumped. The government consultation ends on 18 May. The proposed change is due to take effect from October.

“Customers and bakers are livid about this proposed tax,” said Greggs CEO Ken McMeikan. “The government has lost touch with the realities of how tough life is for UK consumers.”

Earlier this week, retailers used a meeting with senior treasury officials to outline their opposition to the tax, which they claim will be unworkable.
