The OFT has cleared the acquisition by Tesco of five former Somerfield stores.
The competition watchdog said it had decided not to refer the merger to the Competition Commission based on the information currently available to it.
The five stores in question are based in Thurso, Bedlington, Little Lever, Ramsbottom and North Hykeham.
