Andy Hornby has resigned as HBOS chief executive after the company accepted an £11.5bn government cash injection. Hornby joined HBOS in 1999 from Asda, where he was MD of George clothing.

Patrick Bastow, one of the founders of Swedeponic, which supplies fresh herbs to several of the multiples, has rejoined the company as managing director. Bastow originally helped establish Swedeponic in 1998 and left after four years to take up the reins at young plant specialist Yoder Toddington before being invited back to the herb business last month.

Sainsbury’s chairman Sir Philip Hampton is rumoured to have been approached by Royal Bank of Scotland investors about becoming chairman of the bank. Both businesses declined to comment on the speculation, and it is believed a number of City heavyweights were also approached by RBS’s shareholders.

Booker’s commercial director, Bryan Drew, and operations director Bryn Satherley will join the board of directors of the cash & carry giant next month. CEO Charles Wilson said the pair had made a major contribution to the company’s recovery.

Ambrose McGinn, MD of Jenks, Europe’s fastest-growing grocery distributor, has been named the president of the European Sales and Marketing Association. ESMA is the pan-European trade association for companies specialising in sales, marketing and distribution of packaged consumer goods on behalf of manufacturers.

Finsbury Food Group has appointed Graeme Clarke as manager of brand licensing for its WeightWatchers and Thorntons cakes. He joined from pie manufacturer FAS Productions where he was sales director.

Asahi Beer has appointed a new business development manager. Benoit Dulche has joined from Japanese wholesaler Tazaki Foods, where he was sales manager and has been tasked with growing sales of Asahi within the UK’s Asian communities.

Barbara Dure, president of Plymouth & South West Co-operative Society, is to retire at the society’s agm next year.
