An investigation has been launched after a chemical leak at a Brakes distribution centre in Tamworth.

Eight people were taken to hospital following the ammonia leak from a refrigeration system during routine maintenance.

Another 20 people were treated on-site for breathing difficulties.

Deliveries for the rest of the day were disrupted as the depot was made safe, with normal service resumed the next day. No food was affected.

"The depot was quickly and safely evacuated in accordance with our procedures," Brakes said.

"Unfortunately, an engineer from our refrigeration contractor was injured and taken to hospital, where he is making a good recovery. After a thorough inspection and sign-off by the appropriate authorities, the depot was declared safe and is fully operational."

The Health & Safety Executive is investigating the cause of the leak.
