Safeway is to launch a 150-strong range of low fat products called Eat Smart in time for the New Year dieting panic. Consisting of meals, desserts, sandwiches, snacks and meal accompaniments, the range features low fat, low calorie versions of indulgent dishes such as Sweet and Sour Chicken with Rice and Chocolate and Cherry Mousse. According to Safeway, the majority of UK adults are overweight, with one in five so obese that it poses a significant problem to their health. It also says one third of the UK adult population is trying to lose weight at any one time, a figure that's increasing year-on-year. It describes Eat Smart as "dedicated to delivering tasty and sensible solutions for consumers trying to manage their weight".With prices ranging from 42p for one dessert to £2.99 for some ready meals, all the products contain less than 3% fat. Desserts have fewer than 150 calories, while the rest of the range also boast lower calorie counts than normal. The meals, for example all contain fewer than 400 calories. The range is aimed at 25 to 34-year-olds, who make up the largest proportion of the reduced fat market. Safeway is backing Eat Smart with a relaunched Nutritional Advice Service. Full-time nutritionists will provide tailored advice via phone or the internet. {{P&P }}
