Somerfield has announced plans to ditch the Kwik Save brand in Scotland.

The multiple said it aimed to close 22 Scottish Kwik Save stores altogether because they were in poor locations and were not sufficiently profitable.

The remaining 29 stores will be converted to the Somerfield fascia. The retailer said it would aim to transfer all staff at these sites to the reformatted stores.

The multiple said its East Kilbride depot, which currently serves Scottish Kwik Save stores, will be phased out. The remaining 29 converted stores will be supplied via Somerfield’s Pitreavie warehouse.

Somerfield said it would try to find as many alternative jobs for staff affected by the changes, but said about 400 jobs could still be lost.
