Scotmid Co-operative Society is planning to snap up Scottish Spar convenience chain Botterills.
Botterills, number 19 on The Grocer’s Top 50 ranking of independent grocery retailers, is understood to have been up for sale for some time. Scotmid said negotiations were already underway to acquire the 51-store chain.
“The negotiations are at the due diligence stage and therefore neither party will be commenting further at this time,” the society said in a statement.
Scotmid has previously indicated that it plans to focus on convenience after selling a supermarket to Tesco in April this year.
Botterills recorded sales of £77.5m and profits of £696,000 in the year to 30 May 2009.
