Select & Save has promised to absorb the costs incurred by its independent retailers if they fail to meet new minimum order requirements from Nisa-Today's.

Nisa-Today's retail members were informed of the introduction of the Low Weekly Order Volume Levy at the end of July.

From this Monday any store ordering less than 200 cases per week will be charged £20.

From 1 October, stores that order a combined

quantity across the temperature-controlled range of less than 75 cases will receive a £10 charge for that week.

There will also be a £10 charge for stores that miss placing an order on a scheduled day.

In a statement to its members, Select & Save said it "considered this action damaging to our members and therefore refuse to accept this activity. No charges will therefore be paid by Select & Save members".

But Nisa-Today's said that the measures were being introduced in order to ensure continued efficiency of Nisa-Today's Central Distribution Services division.

The levy would "protect members against the rising costs associated with very low drops and missed orders," said chief executive Neil Turton.
