Spar has opened a 400 sq ft c-store at one of the MoD’s new one-stop shops combining a retail, catering and leisure offer at military bases.

The development, at RAF Henlow, Bedfordshire, is part of the MoD’s new Pay As You Dine initiative, whereby servicemen and women pay as they go for food, instead of paying a fixed monthly fee.

Similar sites will be trialled at Hyde Park and Culdrose, Cornwall, said Spar/Naafi development manager John Murray. There were also several bases that did not currently have a shop on site where the MoD was looking to set up one-stop facilities, providing opportunities for Spar to bid for contracts, added Murray.

He declined to comment on the implications of Naafi’s imminent withdrawal from the British market for Spar, which supplies more than 100 Naafi stores in Britain. “Having been in close partnership with Naafi since 1997, we believe that we have the right offer for the defence sector and we’re working with all three of the main contractors to continue demonstrating that.”
