Spar UK has pledged to reduce its use of plastic carrier bags by 25%. The retail group has given itself until the end of next year to meet the target, and will do so by training staff to be more aware of the number of bags they offer and through the introduction of a new reusable carrier bag. The reusable bag is set to be introduced to retailers by Spar's six regional wholesalers over the next few weeks. It will cost 10p and carry the message 'Caring for the environment, reduce, reuse or recycle'. A similar message will appear on point of sale material, which will be distributed to Spar retailers. "This is a very important campaign and one that all Spar retailers will get behind," said Spar UK retail development controller Barry Wallis. "This will drive recycling to a new level and reduce costs while caring for the environment at the same time." Spar stores would also still be offering free carrier bags, he added.
