A BBC programme has accused Sainsbury's and Tesco of breaching health and safety legislation.
The programme, Whistleblower, which will be shown on BBC1 tonight, claims counter staff at two branches of Tesco and Sainsbury's falsifed food temperature records and failed to use different knives for raw and cooked meats, according to reports in the Guardian. Undercover footage of supplier factories also claimed breaches of health and safety.
“Sainsbury's takes any matter relating to food safety extremely seriously,” Sainsbury's said in a statement. “On receipt of the limited information provided by the BBC, we launched an immediate investigation at our store.”
Tesco added: “This programme paints a deeply false picture of our business. We looked vigorously at the store and our suppliers and we are satisfied that any incidents captured on film were not representative of the high standards we insist on.”
