Tesco has invited senior executives from its suppliers to spend a week working at its stores to gain first hand knowledge of its operations.

Speaking to its top 150 suppliers gathered at Hoddesdon for the retailer’s annual supplier conference on Wednesday, chief executive Sir Terry Leahy invited them to participate in Twist (which stands for ‘Tesco week in store together’).

Many senior Tesco staff, including Sir Terry, have already taken part in the scheme, and he told the suppliers a limited number of spaces were available to them.

The conference heard that availability was much better than a year ago, reflecting hard work both by Tesco staff and suppliers. And Sir Terry said the retailer was well placed for its best ever Christmas.

Commercial and trading director John Gildersleeve, who wrapped up last year’s conference by “naming and shaming” a clutch of big brands, was more restrained this year, according to suppliers attending the event.
