A Tesco warehouse in Kent is to close later this year with the loss of 400 jobs.

The warehouse, in Strood, will close in September and its operations will be moved to Tesco’s Thurrock warehouse in Essex over 20 miles away.

Tesco said that the 400 staff at the warehouse would be offered jobs at the Thurrock site.

“By combining our Strood and Thurrock operations into one efficient, modern site, we will get a better location closer to transport networks and economies of scale,” a Tesco spokeswoman said.

However, local reports said that workers at the plant had reacted with disbelief at the news and many remain concerned that commuting to Thurrock everyday would prove too difficult.
