Two men have pleaded not guilty to blackmailing wholesaler Palmer & Harvey.

Clive Garrad, 60, a company director from Newmarket, Suffolk, and Charles Taylor, unemployed, 32, from Dartford, Kent, put in their pleas at Guildford Crown Court on Wednesday. A trial has been set for 21 November.

The alleged blackmail took place over 1 March 2010 to 2 April 2011, the court heard.

Garrad was arrested by armed officers on 3 April while travelling in a car in Davigdor Road, Hove, the site of Palmer & Harvey's head office.

Garrad was released on a £100,000 conditional bail and has surrendered his passport. He has been told he must abide by a curfew and has been prohibited from entering the county of Sussex.

Bail was withheld from Taylor, who has been remanded in custody.

A company founded by Garrad, Sweet Cred Ltd, was put into administration last month. It owes creditors a total of £3.09m, the administrators from Turpin Barker Armstrong said.
