West Midlands Co-op opened the doors to its new Sedgley superstore last week after purchasing the former Safeway site for £7m.
More than 6,000 people passed through the doors in the first two days following a 10-day, £600,000 refurbishment and the introduction of self-scanning checkouts and electronic shelf-edge labels.
The 22,000 sq ft store was acquired from Morrisons in August and all 140 of the former Safeway employees have been kept on.
Manager James Sheldon said: “We have had very positive feedback from customers. All the new facilities such as self-scanning have gone down very well with people, who seem pleased with the refurbished layout.”
In the past year the society has also opened a supermarket in Bicton Heath, Shrewsbury, and a convenience store in Wolverhampton city centre.
