Mail on Sunday: Tesco is adding thousands of new products to its Tesco Direct website. According to the Mail on Sunday, the retailer is increasing pressure on rivals such as Argos by launching a new 1,000-page catalogue next month. Products will include specialist items following the success of its equestrian range. 

The Independent: Meat prices would have to rise to protect the health of the livestock industry, according to The Independent, which said the industry was reeling from the latest outbreak of foot and mouth and the wettest summer on record. The EU export ban on British meat, which was lifted over the weekend, has cost farmers £1.8m a day since it was imposed at the start of the month, the paper said. 

The Times: The Times broke the news that investment fund Delta Two may seek informal guidance from the OFT on whether its £10.6bn plan to bid for Sainsbury's would lead to a regulatory inquiry. According to the paper, the Sainsbury's board is asking the fund to raise the equity in the bid by at least £500m before it will open the company's books. The company reportedly fears the loans underpinning the bid could embroil it in an inquiry into whether increased debt would leave it less competitive. 

The Guardian: Lax advertising rules that expose children to TV adverts for alcohol are undermining a government drive to cut drinking among young people, according to The Guardian. It reported that health charity Alcohol Concern was calling for a 9pm watershed for alcohol advertising on TV on the grounds that popular family shows such as The Simpsons featured drink adverts during the ad breaks. 

The Sun: A poll of 7,000 snackers by food company Trufree has indicated that the custard cream is the nation's favourite biscuit, with nine out of 10 Brits voting for it. The biscuits beat bourbons into second place, with cookies and ginger biscuits following, said The Sun.
