The legal dispute between Scottish & Newcastle and Carlsberg's Russian joint venture Baltic Beverages Holding will be decided by July this year.

In October, S&N claimed Carlsberg had breached the terms of the joint venture agreement when it joined forces with Heineken to make a joint bid for S&N.

In a statement yesterday, S&N said it had received a letter from the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce confirming formal proceedings had started and a decision was expected by 3 July.

Carlsberg said it would welcome an early resolution to the arbitration proceedings, but expected the case to last at least 12 months.

Heineken and Carlsberg have until 21 January to make a formal bid for S&N or walk away. S&N rejected two offers at 720p-a-share and 750p-a-share in November.
