terracycle cigarette butt recycling

Tobacco manufacturer JTI is launching a first-of-a-kind initiative in the UK to allow people to recycle cigarette butts for free. The programme, the Cigarette Waste Brigade, is a partnership between JTI and recycling specialist TerraCycle.

It is estimated by Keep Britain Tidy that 122 tonnes of cigarette butts and smoking-related litter is dropped every day in the UK. Each cigarette butt can take up to 12 years to degrade. The collected waste will be recycled by TerraCycle into a variety of plastic products, such as delivery pallets, with any remaining tobacco or paper composted.

Businesses, retailers and consumers can sign up to the Cigarette Waste Brigade at www.terracycle.co.uk. “This campaign is about encouraging smokers to make the responsible choice of recycling their cigarette waste,” said JTI UK head of corporate affairs and communications Charlie Cunningham Reid.
