Customers will be able to return plastic bottles up to three litres in size, as well as drinks cans

Sainsbury’s has launched a reverse vending recycling trial at its Lincoln superstore.

The move will enable customers to return any Sainsbury’s-bought plastic bottles up to three litres in size, as well as drinks cans, in exchange for 5p coupons towards their shop.

Up to 500 items can be deposited per customer, which could add up to £25, the retailer said.

Four more schemes are expected to launch at other stores “within weeks”.

“We’re delighted to offer a new way to help our customers recycle while saving on their shop,” said Sainsbury’s brand director Judith Batchelar.

“The reverse vending recycling trial is the latest in a line of steps Sainsbury’s is taking as part of its drive to cut plastic by removing, reusing, replacing and recycling.”

Last week, Sainsbury’s announced it would remove plastic bags for loose fruit, vegetables and bakery items from all branches in a bid to remove 489 tonnes of plastic from its stores.
