Strawberries were the standout performer, adding just shy of £70m in sales

UK-grown berries have enjoyed a bumper year, with double-digit sales growth following a surge in interest from health-conscious Brits.

This year’s crop experienced “the biggest growth of any fresh fruit in the past year”, said British Summer Fruits, with values rising more than 10.4% year on year to £1.5bn [Kantar 52 weeks w/e 3 November].

Volumes were also up 13% compared with 2018 at 218,707 tonnes, according to the trade body.

Strawberries were the standout performer, adding just shy of £70m (or 11.3%) in sales to their value over the past 12 months to £687.7m. Meanwhile, blackberries saw sales rise by 6.4% to £448m during the same period.
